On World Food Day, Think Tank Alimentta convenes an open dialogue between science and civil society to accelerate Spain’s transition toward a more sustainable and healthy food system. The event brings together leading researchers in agroecology, fisheries, nutrition, and environmental science to translate cutting-edge evidence from Alimentta’s flagship research into actionable dialogue. The starting point is the scientific case underpinning a proposed food system transformation — a roadmap to 2050 built on modelled calculations that integrate the effectiveness of agroecological management practices, the pivotal role of legumes in fertilisation strategies, the reconfiguration and relocalisation of the fisheries model, a nutritional shift toward healthier dietary patterns, and the combined environmental and socio-economic impacts of implementing these measures together. The evidence is clear: solutions already exist. What’s needed now is the political and social will to make them the new normal. From there, the evidence becomes a springboard for structured dialogue with a coalition of organizations spanning farmers’ unions, fisheries cooperatives, medical and nutrition societies, consumer associations, chefs, and generational-renewal initiatives. Each is invited to test the science against their own on-the-ground realities and sharpen their advocacy narratives in turn. Format: The session opens with a presentation of key findings from Alimentta’s report on the food system’s transformation potential for 2050 (publicly available on the Alimentta website). Following this, 7–10 organizations representing the sectors above join the scientific lecturers for a discussion on equal footing. Each participating entity has prepared a question in advance based on the report, while Alimentta’s technical team has developed tailored questions for each stakeholder — designed to probe both their sector’s role in the transition and the narratives needed to drive lasting change. Later, the dialogue will open up to a broader public, including organisations that work in the third sector, administration and/or in media.

The event will bring together representatives from different parts of the local food chain to share practical experiences and inspire participants to make more conscious food choices. Madara Miezīte, head of Valmiermuiža’s restaurant, will present the restaurant’s approach to selecting local suppliers and building long-term partnerships with farmers and food producers. Participants will gain insight into how sourcing decisions can support local economies while creating high-quality food experiences. Representatives of LAUX, a creative smallholding founded in 2022, will share their experience of combining sustainable farming, hospitality and community engagement. Through their work, LAUX demonstrates how a small-scale agricultural initiative can create both economic and social value while promoting seasonal eating and a closer connection between people and the food they consume. The event will also feature Santa Rumba, who will discuss her experience running an organic farm, supplying certified organic vegetables to schools, participating in direct purchasing initiatives and organising REKO markets. REKO is a community-based direct sales model that connects consumers and producers without intermediaries, strengthening trust, transparency and access to locally produced food. The evening will conclude with a community seed, seedling and harvest exchange. Participants will be invited to bring surplus vegetables, fruits, seeds or planting material from their gardens and exchange them with others. The activity aims to encourage sharing, reduce food waste, strengthen community ties and highlight the value of locally grown food. Through discussions, knowledge-sharing and practical community activities, the event will promote the principles of fair, sustainable and locally rooted food systems that are at the heart of both the Slow Food movement and the European Days of Action for Good Food Good Farming campaign. The event will be organised in close collaboration with Valmiermuiža Craft Brewery and its restaurant, Valmiermuiža’s Alus Virtuve.

The first opening is at the Veruda branch of the Pula City Library, with school classes as our guests; during the European Days of Action the same workshop travels to three more: the Žminj branch, the Retirees’ Club Reading Room in Pula, and the school library in Vodnjan, so that children find a seed library inside their own school. In each of them the children make recycled paper with seeds inside it, using old newspapers and the library’s own discarded pages, so that a page becomes lettuce, chicory or rocket once it is planted. First we look at seeds through magnifying glasses and fill in the catalogue card: which seeds are small and quick enough to live inside paper, and why. Then we tear, blend, pour the pulp into the frame, scatter the seeds into it, press, and lay the sheets out to dry. The paper dries in the library, so every child comes back to collect their sheet like a reserved book, and part of the sheets stays behind, cut into plantable bookmarks that are given away with every seed loan. It started on Terra Madre Day. On 10 December 2025 we opened our first seed library with the Vodnjan branch of the same library system – an idea developed together with the librarians – with 81 seed varieties available for borrowing from day one, free to anyone with a library card, on three rules: borrow the seed, sow it, share it back. It worked, so we kept going: a public programme called “”From seed to plant”” ran through 2026 – sowing and germination testing in February, transplanting in March, “”from seed to ice cream”” for children in July with our European Solidarity Corps volunteers, composting for children in August. This summer the exchange went both ways: at our gelato point on the beach in Peroj we set up an open-air library, with the books supplied by the ecomuseum and by the library. In April and May the library’s director asked us in writing to bring the seed library to her other branches. These four openings are that request, carried out. We are the Slow Food Community for the safeguard of the agro-food heritage in Istria – ISTRIAN Ecomuseum: an ecomuseum with an educational farm and a plant nursery in Vodnjan-Dignano and Rovinj-Rovigno, Istria, Croatia, run as a social enterprise where more than half of the staff comes from vulnerable groups.

Phasing Out Toxic Lead Chromates: Protecting Armenia’s Biodiversity and Farmers

Through our participation in the European Days of Action, AWHHE aims to highlight how the environmental accumulation of toxic lead chromates threatens local soil health, agricultural safety, and long-term food security. During the period of the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, AWHHE will utilize its Facebook platforms to spread information about lead toxicity, the impacts of lead exposure and its sources, and highlight calls to action, including banning lead in paints and controlling the trade of lead chromates, to prevent and reduce lead poisoning. AWHHE will also leverage its participation at the upcoming 17th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 17) in Yerevan. The side events in Green Zone of CBD COP 17 where AWHHE has registered events as participant will be used for broader outreach highlighting the Kunming Montreal Target 7 (pollution) to raise awareness about lead chromates as POPs impacting the health of frontline farmers and violating global biodiversity frameworks. As background material, the information on the Alliance website and social media cards by International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) will be used and adapted/ translated into Armenian. The outreach will also highlight the new technical regulation, TR EAEU 053/2026 “On the Safety of Paint and Varnish Materials,” which was officially adopted by the Eurasian Economic Commission Council on May 20, 2026, and which comes into force on a staggered timeline: January 1, 2028 for Armenia, Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, and January 1, 2032 for Kyrgyzstan. In addition, appeal letter will be sent to the National Focal Point on Rotterdam Convention, to secure Armenia’s vote for the official adoption of hazardous lead chromate pigments at the 2027 COP. In summary, this is a combination of social media outreach and in-person events throughout this year’s Week of Action (18-24 October 2026).
