European Days of Action

October: time to stir your pots and pans! The European Days of Action create spaces where people explore the stories behind our food, question the system we have, and connect with the people building the solutions we need.

Take Action

Every October, the European Days of Action bring together hundreds of locally organised events across Europe. From farm visits and community meals to workshops and public actions, each event creates space for people to explore the stories behind our food, question how the food system works and discover the people already building alternatives.

In 2026, we invite people to look beyond the headlines and investigate the power shaping Europe’s food system. You can take part by organising and registering a local event, and by joining Breaking Food News, the main collective action that will bring local stories from across Europe together into one investigation. If you need financial support to organise an event, you can apply for a grant of up to 850€.

To spark these conversations and inspire action, our food justice video series uses interviews and evidence to investigate the stories shaping Europe’s food system and encourage people to take part and share their own local food stories.

Choose how you want to get involved!

Find an event near you

Use the interactive Action Map to explore events all over Europe and in your region. You can join an event near you and meet the people who are growing, cooking, organising and reimagining food systems in your community.

Food Justice Video Series

Watch and share this video series, where we reveal the relationships between food, power and politics, featuring interviews with activists, farmers and researchers form all over Europe. More videos to come soon!

A few hands control our food system…

Farmers and food producers have the least say over the system they work within. Power over seeds, pesticides, machinery, processing, trade and retail sits with a handful of companies, and that market power buys political power too, through lobbying, industry groups and privileged access to regulators. The result: fewer choices and less voice for farmers, workers, small food businesses and the communities around them.

Who gets to become a farmer?

Across most of Europe, more than half of farms have nobody ready to take over. Since 2007, Europe has lost almost 2
million farms. This is not because people have stopped caring about farming. The next generation is ready to grow food, build
community farms and create new ways of working. But land, money, infrastructure and political influence are often out
of reach.

The industrial promise is breaking down

Cheap. Abundant. Convenient.🌾
That was the promise of the food system. But cheap for whom? Abundant for whom? Convenient for whom? Around one in ten people in Europe still cannot afford a healthy meal every second day. Food prices are rising, almost a third of food is lost or wasted before it is eaten, and  children are targeted by unhealthy food advertising online. So why do we keep rewarding the same system?

Another food system is already growing

Community-supported agriculture. Seed banks. Agroecological farms. Food councils. Free school meals. Food social security. 🏫 🤝
Across Europe, people are already building food systems based on cooperation, healthy food, shared knowledge and care for nature. Why are they still treated as the exception, while industrial food production continues to receive most of the investment and attention? A fairer food system is already taking root.

Open video in pop-up and play
Why are we still investing in the past?

Every year, public money helps decide which kind of farming survives. 💲💲💲
Public funding continues to support a food system dependent on imported feed, synthetic fertilisers and fossil energy. At the same time, powerful agribusiness companies lobby decision-makers, fund research and help shape the rules that govern food and farming. But food systems are designed. That means they can be redesigned.

The collective action: Breaking Food News

Investigate your local food system and reveal the stories that deserve more attention, then share them as part of this year’s collective action: Breaking Food News! Groups across Europe will take action at the same time, and we’ll collect and showcase every report.

How? Whether you’re hosting a farm visit, community meal, workshop, or public action, invite participants to film a short, humorous Breaking Food News report. No experience needed: our guide walks you through it step by step, from researching and framing your story to shooting your first take. Then share it on social media and upload it here.

A few of the headlines to investigate this year:

BREAKING FOOD NEWS: Another working food system has been found. It wasn’t missing after all.

BREAKING FOOD NEWS: Another farmer retires. The replacement never arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in the European Days of Action?

Everyone who wants to raise their voice for more food justice in Europe is welcome to participate in the European Days of Action for #GoodFoodGoodFarming! No matter if you are part of an organisation, initiative, community group, farm, school, municipality or informal collective, or a single activist, you can organise an event to spark conversations about the future of our food. Additionally, you can take part in the Collective Action BREAKING FOOD NEWS.

Until when can I register my event?

There is no fixed deadline. The registration form stays open from 1 September through the end of October, and you can register any event taking place during October. If you’re also hoping for a subgrant, though, it’s best to apply as early as you can — see “How can I get a subgrant for my event, and how are they decided?” below for how that timing works.

Is it possible to apply with a nation-wide/online event, or only local events?

Yes, online as well as nationwide events are welcome – there’s no fixed format you need to follow. Just one thing to keep in mind: if you also take part in Breaking Food News, that report specifically asks for local, on-the-ground storytelling — real people, places and experiences — rather than speaking about the issue in general terms, so you’d want to ground that part in specific local stories even if the event itself is national in scope.

Can an organisation register more than one event?

Yes. There’s no limit on how many events one organisation can register — we encourage you to register ALL! If you’re seeking a subgrant for more than one, though, keep in mind our selection criteria (see below) favour spreading funding across as many organisations and regions as possible rather than concentrating it on a single applicant, so multiple grant requests from the same organisation may be evaluated with that in mind.

How will GFGF support me in taking action?

We provide all necessary resources in the section above. There, you can find an Action Guide that provides you with plenty of useful resources, including a social media kit, step-by-step instructions on how to host an event or guidance on how to participate in the Collective Action Breaking Food News. Your action will also be displayed on our Action Map, increasing its visibility and reach!

How can I get a subgrant for my event, and how are they decided?

You can apply for a grant of up to €850 for your event during registration. If you’re considering this option, please read the Action Guide first to understand the conditions of receiving a grant for an event.

Funding is limited, so not everyone is guaranteed a grant — we have to make a selection. Subgrants are awarded first-come, first-served, so the earlier you apply, the greater your chances of receiving one. We review applications weekly and notify all applicants by email by the end of each week, starting the first week of September — please wait for that email rather than writing in to ask. Applications are also assessed against criteria such as reach, political impact, need and geographic spread, so funding is spread fairly across regions.

What kind of expenditure is eligible for the subgrants?

Eligible costs are any costs which will help you a) organise an event, b) take part in the collective action, Breaking Food News, or c) use the campaign resources. Examples include venue hire, materials & supplies, catering, transport, printing, media coverage, an external microphone for your Breaking Food News report, and compensation for speakers/helpers. Therefore, eligible costs include personnel/labour costs to ensure you can organise an event or take part in the collective action, such as paying someone to help film or edit your report.

Can invoices for financial reporting be in my national language?

Yes, that’s completely expected — we work with organisations across Europe. Your receipts and invoices can stay in your own language, in line with EU law; only the reimbursement form needs to be in English.

What do I need to submit after my event?

If you received a subgrant, once your event is over and you’ve filmed your Breaking Food News report:

1. Submit the impact report — a short form that shouldn’t take more than around 10 minutes, due within two weeks of your event.
2. Submit the reimbursement form. You’ll receive your reimbursement within two weeks of submitting that form.
3. Upload your Breaking Food News material and event pictures to this folder.

If you didn’t receive funding, step 3 is the only one that applies to you — we’d still love to see your footage and pictures.

Clicking yes does not guarantee you a grant. We will make a selection and contact you with payment information if you have been selected. By accepting a grant, you commit to certain conditions. Read more in the FAQ section.
